Professional Development Program

WSARE-funded PDP State Activities for 2002:

Major activities funded through the Western Region SARE professional development state grants include:

  • Mini-grants to support sustainable agriculture educational programs or demonstration projects conducted by extension educators:
    - Treasure Valley Forage Demonstration Plots; Drip Irrigation for Water Conservation in Southeastern Idaho; Sustainable focus for 2002 Magic Valley Field men's Workshop Series; and the Lost Rivers Grazing Academy IV.
     
  • Support for numerous conferences and workshops, including:
    - Pastured Poultry Conference in Nampa, March 2002; Farmer to Consumer: Enhancing the Connection in Post Falls, Feb. 2002; Successful Direct Marketing in Twin Falls, March 2002.
     
  • Development and enhancements to the Idaho Sustainable Agriculture web page including a focus on Small Farms.
     
  • Collaborate with and support regional programming for small acreage farmers and ranchers.  Continue to support aspects of collaborative projects with Rural Roots, The Inland Northwest Community Food System Association, including quarterly issues of Bringing Home the Harvest, three summer farm tours, meetings and workshops such as Rural Roots Spring Fling 2002 in Coeur d' Alene, April 2002. Related projects which are not SARE funded include:
    - Northwest Direct: Improving Markets for Small Farms- A joint USDA IFAFS research project between WSU, OSU, UI, and Rural Roots.
    - Cultivating Success: A certificate Program in Sustainable Small Acreage Farming and Ranching- A joint USDA HECG project between UI, Rural Roots, and WSU.
