Program Information

The Department of Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry offers these four undergraduate degrees:

Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry

Biochemistry deals with the study of the chemical basis of life, the physical requirements for life, the genetic properties of living things, and the metabolic processes of cells.

Bachelor of Science in Microbiology

Microbiology is concerned with the study of microscopic forms of life, their distribution, and the significance of microbes in protecting other life forms, in causing disease in plants, animals, and insects, in biogeochemical cycles, and as models for growth and development.

Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology

The medical technology degree prepares a student for a career as a healthcare professional who performs diagnostic analytical tests for medical facilities.

Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and   Biotechnology

The molecular biology and biotechnology major deals with the study of the molecular basis of life, the technologies for the genetic engineering of organisms, bioinformatics, and the roles of biological organisms in health, nutrition, agriculture, and the environment.

The curricula emphasize the need for a broad base education and specific training in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, in addition to courses in the specialty area. Students may choose to emphasize a particular aspect of these disciplines by appropriate choices of courses.  Well-equipped laboratories are available and students are encouraged to undertake research problems with individual faculty members to develop their skills in problem solving, scientific writing, and public presentation.

These degrees provide a perfect entry into professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, medical technology) and allied health fields (nursing, veterinary medicine, dental hygienist).

Students in other disciplines who wish to increase their understanding of the sciences are welcome to take courses offered by MMBB.  Students are invited to inquire about academic minors in the department.
