Margaret Ritchie School
of Family and Consumer Sciences Celebrates Centennial
by Casey Hanson
On
January 15, 2002 the School of Family and Consumer Sciences kicked off
a year of centennial celebrations when Governor Dirk Kempthorne signed
a proclamation 1902-2002 100 Years Enriching Lives.
The centennial activities included the Golden I Reunion with the highlight
of the Family Award Tree Dedication on May 3. More than 100 people attended
this event with a weeping beech tree being dedicated for families who
have graduated more than one family member from the School of Family and
Consumer Sciences. On the heels of this event was the popular Cooks
Tour to Italy. Featuring hands-on cooking lessons in three Italian regions
by three chefs, this tour from June 10-21 quickly sold out. All guests
received a complimentary UI Vandals Chefs jacket and a recipe
syllabus of all lessons. The School of Family and Consumer Sciences Centennial
Celebrations held in conjunction with Ag Days on September 19-22 drew
more than 225 participants. The weekends activities included the
show Quaint, Quixotic, Kitsch, at the Prichard Art Gallery,
presentations by the Margaret Ritchie Distinguished Speaker-Stephanie
Coontz (see article), a Home Management House
presentation, a reception at President Hoovers house, and concluded
with a banquet celebrating the Centennial 100 Award recipients.
