Greg Bohach takes helm of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station

Greg Bohach, a microbiologist and one of the University of Idaho’s top research scientists, is the 19th leader of the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station since it began in 1892. He replaces Dick Heimsch, a 32-year UI veteran who retired in March.

Bohach joined the UI faculty in 1988.He served as head of the Department of Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry before accepting the new position.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity this will give me to work with other UI researchers who are doing excellent work,” Bohach said.

Continuing biomedical research work
In addition to his new role,Bohach is continuing to direct the UI Center of Biomedical Research Excellence. It was established in 2000 with a five-year $9.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study infectious disease.

In 2002, he also helped land a $2 million project for UI to explore development of vaccines as part of a new Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research.The $50 million regional center is operated through the Washington,Wyoming,Alaska, Montana and Idaho Medical Education Program based at the University of Washington. It is funded by the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services.
