The keys are dichotomous, or couplet keys. Each screen contains two choices—“a” and “b.” One of them will best describe the insect you wish to identify.

In the example below, choosing “a” indicates that the insect you are trying to identify is a below-ground pest.

Choosing “b” indicates that the insect you are trying to identify is an above-ground pest.
