Leather jacket larva on potato

Leather Jackets/Crane Fly Larvae
Tipula spp.

Larvae of crane flies are elongate, grayish-white, and up to 40 mm long. Short, fleshy protuberances are present on the rear of the body. Adults are reddish brown flies 25 to 30 mm long that resemble giant mosquitoes. Damage occurs when larvae burrow into tubers or feed on roots. Low or wet areas of fields are likely spots for leather jacket damage. Host plants: grasses, cereals, potatoes, alfalfa.
