Lygus bug nymph (top) and adult

Lygus Bugs
Lygus spp.

Adult lygus bugs are 6 to 7 mm long and vary in color from a pale yellowish-green to a dark reddish-brown. An easily recognized marking is a yellowish, triangular-shaped area on top of the body at the base of the wings. The young nymph is shiny green and moves very rapidly, in contrast to aphids. Lygus bugs suck sap from tender leaves, buds, stems, and seeds often causing stem or leaf death, aborted flowers, or distorted seed. Host plants: alfalfa, clover, beans, peas, lentils, potatoes, sugarbeets, grasses, fruits, seed crops.
