Basic science research involves research in experimental animals or in cell or tissue cultures, and explores what is happening at the tissue or cellular level. The benefit of basic science research is that it can be very tightly controlled. On the other hand, what happens in a test tube or petri dish may not happen exactly the same in the complex human body.
