Outstanding Student Awards:
The Outstanding Student Awards recognize students who show potential for contributing to the fields of agriculture, life sciences, or family & consumer sciences upon graduation.
Awards will be given in four student categories:
- Capital Press Outstanding Freshman in Agriculture
- Outstanding Sophomore
- Capital Press Outstanding Junior in Agriculture
- Outstanding Senior
Eligibility:
Only students with a declared major within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences are eligible. The nominee must be working actively on a degree from one of the eight academic departments of the college: Agricultural and Extension Education, Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, Animal and Veterinary Science, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food Science and Toxicology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and Plant, Soil, and Entomological Sciences.
Awards will be given in four student categories: Capital Press Outstanding Freshman in Agriculture, Outstanding Sophomore, Capital Press Outstanding Junior in Agriculture, and Outstanding Senior.
The nominee’s class standing will be determined as follows and be based on the total number of earned credits at the close of the fall semester (spring credits do not count): a) Freshman, 0 to 25 credits not including earned advanced placement and dual enrollment credits; b) Sophomore, 26 to 57 credits; c) Junior, 58 to 89 credits; and c) Senior, 90 + credits. Nominees for Outstanding Senior must be in their LAST year at UI and be eligible to apply for graduation during the current academic year (December 07, May 08, Summer 08). Students with over 89 credits but not otherwise eligible for graduation may apply for the Capital Press Outstanding Junior in Agriculture award. Exceptions to these guidelines can be made in special circumstances - with appropriate documentation by the respective Academic Department Head. Individual Selection Committee members will have the final determination whether to consider the requested exception.
Selection Criteria:
The nominee MUST show potential for contributing to the fields of agriculture, life sciences, or family and consumer sciences upon graduation.
Other criteria the selection committee may consider when ranking the nominees include (in no particular order):
- Activities within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences such as, but not limited to: Agricultural Student Affairs Committee (AgSac), departmental clubs /organizations, honorary societies, or involvement in departmental or CALS Administration efforts by providing clerical assistance, laboratory support or fieldwork.
- Academic achievement.
- Participation in University of Idaho campus activities and organizations.
- Professional experiences including internships.
- Participation in undergraduate research and/or serving as a teaching aid or tutor.
- Participation in community service.
